Remember this thrift shop treasure?
I bought it for Jason's "big boy room transformation"
& yes, even though it's already blue, it's still not the right color to match his vintage American heroes theme. So I began it's makeover...
Inside & Out.
Only because I knew the old wood interior would cause way too many splinters
and HELLO...it's hideous!

Details:
The red color was some leftover paint I had laying around. "Oops paint", if you will.
Since the red was too bright (not good for the vintage look I was going for), I toned it down with Valspar's translucent mocha glaze. It's pretty much the only glaze I use.
The hardware was painted in Rustoleum's Oil-rubbed bronze. It's a spray paint, but I sprayed some into a plastic bowl and hand-painted it onto the hardware with a few Q-tips. Seriously!
Lining the inside with fabric was the hard part because of the measuring. I used a ticking stripe fabric from Hancock Fabrics. It was on clearance for $5.99/yard. Yay!!! I pretty much used most of the 2 yards. Glued it straight onto the wood with adhesive spray and the edges were glued on with Fabri-Tac. Hope it holds!
Then I added some black ribbon along the edge of the fabric just for an accent.
Verdict:
I love how it turned out! I love that the makeover still makes it look old...good old! And I'm so glad it's done. I chipped away at this project for two weeks-way too long for something this small. But that's what happens when your toddler decides to spontaneously shorten his naps from the usual 3 hours (bliss!) to 1 hour (ugh! WHY??)
This turned out super good!! Good idea to spray the paint in bowl and use qtips for hardware. I really love it. Can't wait to see how it looks in Jason's room. Yeah I feel ya on the naps they seem to be getting shorter for me too. I haven't done anything crafty in like two weeks!
ReplyDeleteHonestly fabulous! I love how the glaze will knock down a color, I have just recently discovered that. If you used Fabri-Tac that fabric is not going anywhere. I was looking wondering how in the world you painted that hardware, because it is not removable......The hard way, you poor thing, it worked and it looks great!
