It's no secret that I love being thrifty. I also strive to be unique with my creations and the same goes for the things I love to decorate with. I don't like to have matchy-matchy. No two lamps or pillows are the same in my home. For some odd reason, knowing that someone has the same materials to create the same things I do irks me to the core. Not sure why.
not weird, right?
Today I'm going to share a few of my secrets with you when it comes to my unique resources. My vintage secrets, as I 'd like to call them. Don't worry, my OCD won't go bonkers for spilling these beans.
#1. I recycle everything.
It's kind of an annoying obsession of mine. If it's re-washable, it's re-usable. Stained baby shirts become sanding rags. Grocery bags become handy everywhere. Pasta sauce jars become trinket jars. Old clothes become scraps of fabric. And buttons from said clothes, are saved for crafts.

#2. My fabrics come from old clothes.
Browsing fabric stores can be fun, but I feel like all the stores carry the same prints. Meaning, the entire crafty world has access to the same things. If you ever browse Etsy, do you ever see different handmade scarves made of the same fabric that you had just seen at JoAnn's? Not like that's a bad thing-like I said, I just like having unique creations made of unique materials. Which brings me back to secret #1 of recycling. I browse thrift shops for clothing with nice prints, even if it means getting odd looks from cashiers for buying a 3XL shirt. Hey, the bigger the shirt, the more material. More than likely, JoAnn's isn't selling that same print in bulk to other crafty folks.
And if the item comes with pretty buttons, it's an even better score!
I can't wait to cut this dress up!

What a great idea to get old clothes for fabric. I am so looking at the clothes next time I'm at Goodwill. Love the fabric and buttons on that dress. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteGood for you Josie! I love to see someone so young, so thrifty! So many people in your age group buy the $400 dollar jeans and figure out how they will pay off the credit card later!
